Bridging The Gap
Water main break delays flights at New York's beleaguered JFK airport.

Water main break delays flights at New York\'s beleaguered JFK airport.

A water main break at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport delayed flights and forced a partial terminal evacuation Sunday as the airport struggled to recover from last week's powerful storm and a relentless run of bitter cold temperatures.

The water main was the latest bad news for the airport, which has scrambled to fully function since the "bomb cyclone" storm blasted much of the East Coast on Thursday. The immediate future wasn't much brighter — the forecast for Monday afternoon and evening called for more snow and ice.

"Due to a water main break at #JFK Terminal 4 there are flight delays," the airport tweeted Sunday. "Please check with your airline prior to coming to the airport."

The terminal was accepting no international arrivals for much of the afternoon, but around 7:45 p.m. ET, the airport said it was resuming operations. Residual delays were expected.

The storm Thursday forced temporary closure of the airport. Hundreds of flights were canceled, and hundreds more were delayed or rerouted as authorities sought safe refuge for planes before, during and after the storm.

Disruptions continued into the weekend, with some planes sitting on tarmacs for hours awaiting runways or gates. The ongoing complications drew social media outrage and even fisticuffs amid tangled flight schedules.

"There are 300 passengers there and I should say they're becoming restless," he said.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees New York's airports, said airlines were rescheduling passengers but that near-record cold temperatures were adversely affecting equipment, further slowing the airport's recovery.

"A surge in flights at JFK Airport, produced by the rescheduling of delayed flights, combined with the effects of the winter storm, which severely disabled equipment, has resulted in terminal operators and airlines experiencing delays in getting planes and their passengers into their gates," the Port Authority said in a statement.

Elsewhere, Salt Lake City's airport said late Sunday afternoon that about 20 incoming flights had been diverted due to low visibility caused by fog. KSL-TV reported that all flights coming into the airport were being diverted.
