Bridging The Gap
Retirement age should not be changed
  Monday 20 December, 2010

THIS is apropos of the letters (Dec 12 and 15), carrying absolutely contrasting opinions on the retirement-age issue. As far as I can remember the retirement age during Field Marshal Muhammad Ayub Khan`s regime was 55 which was raised to 58 during Gen Agha Mohammad Yahya Khan`s era. It was further raised to 60 by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto`s government.

Reducing the retirement age will be shocking for civil servants who are on the verge of attaining the age of 58 and have planned their lives according to the timeframe of the retirement at 60 years.

Many such people plan to own a house, arrange marriages of their daughters and support the higher education of their children from the funds they expect to get at that time.

The current economical conditions would not allow the government to make compensation against the earlier retirement of the civil servants. If they decide about new hiring on the basis of retirement at the age of 58, it is not going to solve the unemployment problem. Hence, it is not a practical idea in the present situation.

Moreover, it is common observation that people as long as they stay employed have good health. Their health declines steadily post-retirement.

Ideally I would like to see people engaged in work as long as they are physically and mentally fit. As such I would like the retirement age to be maintained at 60 years for now.
