2 quakes felt in San Francisco area in a matter of hours. They\'re not related, expert says

SALINAS, Calif. A magnitude 4.7 earthquake shook the ground in Salinas around 12:42 p.m. local time Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It came hours after a magnitude 4.5 quake hit the San Francisco Bay Area.

The latest quake was downgraded from a magnitude of 5.0 and was centered in Tres Pinos. That location is about 100 miles south of the site of the previous temblor, which occurred at 10:33 p.m. PST Monday night, with an epicenter in Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek.

During the first quake, weak shaking was felt in San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose, per the USGS. A 2.5 magnitude foreshock also took place 10 minutes earlier near Pleasant Hill.

While there were reports of shaking felt in the San Francisco region from both quakes, the two temblors occurred too far apart to be related, according to Veteran seismologist Lucy Jones.

The latest earthquake's epicenter was in a rugged mountain range, with agricultural areas to the west.

Officials are investigating whether the quakes may have caused a fire at an oil storage facility in the San Francisco Bay Area that was burning Tuesday. No injuries have been reported.

The earthquakes took place days before the 30th anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The 6.9 magnitude earthquake killed 63 people and injured thousands.

Many locals took to Twitter to share their unease at the overnight taking place almost exactly three decades after the deadly shock.
