Bridging The Gap
Joan Baez confirms 'final formal North American tour.' Here are all the dates.

Joan Baez confirms \'final formal North American tour.\' Here are all the dates.

Joan Baez is joining Paul Simon, Elton John, Ozzy Osbourne, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Slayer on the growing list of veteran music stars to announce their farewell tours, although she may be hedging her bets.

The folk music queen and 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of fame inductee is describing her upcoming concert trek as her “final formal American tour.” That leaves the door open to at least some future informal performances.

The tour will be in support of her upcoming new album, “Whistle Down The Wind,” which will be released Friday and is her first album of new music in 10 years. The title track was written by former San Diegan Tom Waits and his wife, Kathleen Brennan. The album also includes the Waits- and Brennan-penned song “Last Leaf.”

Not coincidentally, tickets for the tour also go sale Friday.

Baez’s tour will open Sept. 11 at the State Theatre in Ithaca, N.Y., and concludes Nov. 17 at the Fox Theater Oakland, one of five California dates she will perform. The first is Oct. 30 at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay.

All the cities and dates appear below.

“I’m looking forward to being on the road with a beautiful new album of which I am truly proud,” Baez, 77, said in a statement released Monday morning.

“I welcome the opportunity to share this new music as well as longtime favorites with my audiences around the world.”

A CD or digital download of “Whistle Down The Wind” will be included with every ticket purchased for her tour.

The album features Baez performing songs by Mary Chapin Carpenter, Josh Ritter, Eliza Gilkyson, Anohni and three-time Grammy Award-winner Joe Henry, who produced “Whistle Down The Wind.”

Tickets for Baez’s San Digo concert at Humphreys are priced at $72.50 each and go on sale Friday at 10 at ticketmaster.com and by phone at (800) 745-3000. Dinner and hotel packages are also available.
