AVALON, Calif. – Authorities have found 1,300 pounds of plastic-wrapped marijuana floating in the ocean near Santa Catalina Island off Southern California.
The Daily News reports Wednesday that the U.S. Coast Guard acting on a tip discovered 43 bales of pot worth about $1 million. According to the report, which cites the U.S. Coast Guard news release, a bystander reported seeing what they believed to be narcotics floating near the island.
The marijuana was delivered to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Federal officials are investigating where it came from.
In July, Coast Guard members boarded a semi-submarine racing through the waves, one of many operations seizing cocaine and marijuana in international waters off Mexico and Central and South America.
The agency released dramatic video of the encounter with smugglers.
