Bill Weld jumps into presidential race, giving Trump a GOP primary challenger

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump just got a primary opponent for his 2020 re-election.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld announced Monday he is officially running for the Republican nomination for president.

In his announcement video, Weld's campaign plays up his record as a Republican governor in a deep blue state, before saying “America deserves better." The video then highlights some of President Trump's most controversial comments.

Weld was governor of Massachusetts from 1991 to 1997 and the vice presidential nominee for the Libertarian Party in 2016.

Even with the primary challenge, Trump is still the favorite to win his party's nomination.

In Iowa, the first state in the nation to begin the nominating process, 4% of Iowa Republicans polled viewed Weld favorably, 15% viewed him unfavorably and 81% didn't know enough or were unsure, according to the latest Des Moines Register/CNN/Mediacom Iowa poll from March. In that same poll, 81 percent of Republicans polled said they approved of the job President Trump was doing.

And Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel earlier this year brushed aside talk of a Republican primary challenger to Trump.

"They have the right to jump in and lose," she told the crowd at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. "That's fine. They'll lose horribly."
