ANN ARBOR AREA DECEMBER EVENTS ROUND-UP.

ANN ARBOR AREA DECEMBER EVENTS ROUND-UP.

Bundle (and buckle) up! Hard as it is to believe, December is already upon us – a cheerfully frenetic season of holidays, gift-giving, music, and family; and the Ann Arbor area is particularly well-equipped to provide for your holiday needs, thanks to local business sale events, winter art fairs, and concerts. Plus, when you want to give yourself a break, there are theater productions on offer, as well as the long-awaited re-opening of Ann Arbor’s 1942 Art Deco-style movie house, the State Theater. These things and more are sure to warm your spirits during this traditionally cold season. Click here for an entire list of upcoming December events.

The newly renovated State Theater’s re-opening. Though donating members will get a sneak peek inside the State Theater (233 S. State St., Ann Arbor) on December 8, the general public will get first crack at seeing this Art Deco cinema – originally opened in Ann Arbor in 1942, and designed by architect C. Howard Crane – on December 9th. After the facility’s closure more than a year ago for renovations, State patrons will soon get to experience the theater’s new, state-of-the-art sound- and projection-system; a new elevator; improved seating and more legroom; a full service bar; four screening rooms (up from two), with seating for 50-135; and refurbished interiors. The multimillion State Theater renovation was funded by the Michigan Theater Foundation.

DIYpsi Holiday Market. An annual handmade art fair that takes place in Ypsilanti’s business districts once each summer and winter. For two weekends each year, these areas host the best indie artists that the city and region have to offer for a one of a kind shopping experience that will take care of everyone on your list. And bring your appetite! Incredible hand crafted food and drink (and occasionally an eclectic mix of live music) will be on offer when you go. Doing your shopping at DIYpsi means you’re contributing to a larger cause – keeping thousands of dollars invested in the local economy and supporting the arts. Saturday, December 9th from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, December 10th from noon to 6 p.m., at Riverside Arts Center (76 N. Huron St., Ypsilanti).

Winter Art Tour. The Winter Art Tour will take you on a tour of 10 art shows across Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, featuring over 300 local artists, December 8-10. In addition to presenting the best handcrafted art our area has to offer, the event also promotes local artists, and thus creates a more vibrant arts community for everyone. Take the tour – and if you get your “passport” stamped at four or more events, you’ll be entered into a drawing to win a locally produced work of art.
